Having piles or hemorrhoids is usually not enough to cause panic for people who suffer from them. It is, after all, a very common condition that affects a huge number of the world’s population. But there are times when an individual who has them needs to undergo hemorrhoid surgery which is usually reserved for the worst cases of piles. This thought is more than enough to spook anybody but understanding why it happens can help in easing the anxiety of going under the knife.

What can make you decide to have them removed?

By and large, hemorrhoids, save for the discomfort and the occasional pain, are considered harmless by physicians and medical experts. By tweaking some eating habits and telling patients to be more active, surgery can be avoided easily enough.

Unfortunately, there are people who can’t help but put themselves in situations where they are more prone to developing hemorrhoids and eventually aggravating their conditions requiring them to have surgery. These are usually men and women who exert considerable amount of physical strength in their line of work like heavy lifting and sitting for long periods of time.

If you happen to be one of them and you already have piles, make sure you take note of the following things you should learn in order not to make you a candidate for surgery:

-          Avoid putting more strain and pressure on your hemorrhoids as it could lead to ruptured veins which in turn can lead to bleeding. When this happens, the risk of your piles getting infected increases drastically which may lead you to the operating table.

-          If you have internal hemorrhoids, you are prone to prolapse which is often caused by straining too hard when you try to move your bowels. Your piles are pushed out and can sometimes be stuck which is more painful than having external hemorrhoids. When you can’t push it back in, you have no choice but to ask doctors to do it for you or have it cut off.

-          Surgery is required when the size of your piles begin to obstruct your regular bowel movement. It’s important that you avoid things that can further increase its swelling. Adding more fiber to your diet loosens up the consistency of your stool thus making it easier to push out and lessening the strain on your hemroids. Exercise all helps improve blood circulation to prevent blood from clotting which can result to thrombosed hemorrhoids.

Surgery can be done by manual removal or using lasers to cauterize swollen nerve endings. It’s important to sit down with your doctor and discuss the effects of surgically removing hemorrhoids and what you can do to prepare for it.
